RELATING
Between Proportion and Presence
2026 LIMN
May 27, 2026
Over the past three years, from 2023 to the present, we have held three exhibitions: FORMING, PERCEIVING, and RELATING. These three exhibitions tell a story about contemporary aesthetic cognition and experience—a cohesive narrative that progresses from the rational exploration of FORMING, through the amplification of perception in PERCEIVING, to the establishment of relationships in RELATING. This progressive trajectory also extends to the intellectual origins of art and design. In the exploration of modern art since the mid-20th century, several key artists—each from their own creative perspective—have enabled us to understand the underlying logic of modern art through retrospective reflection.
The poster for this exhibition draws inspiration from the poster for Sol LeWitt’s first major retrospective, held at MoMA in New York in 1978. Sol LeWitt, one of the founders of Conceptual Art and Minimalism, played a pivotal role in the dissemination of contemporary art. Held in the United States nearly fifty years ago, that exhibition shaped contemporary artistic thought across the globe at the time. This exhibition traces the threads of Modernism and Minimalism to connect numerous pioneers across the fields of art, architecture, and design. Amid the tides of history, these great works have never existed in isolation. This is precisely the essence that RELATING seeks to capture: establishing a series of subtle connections between objects and objects, concepts and physical forms, and reason and emotion.
In 2022, marking the tenth year of Limi, we created three installations. Among them, the installation *Knot* uses mortise-and-tenon joints to interpret the interconnection between materials, foreshadowing that our relationship with the world should be even closer; the installation *Emptiness* draws inspiration from the *Tao Te Ching*: “By cutting out doors and windows to make a room, it is the ‘nothing’ that gives the room its function.” using a pinewood frame to create a unique spatial field that elucidates the essence of space; the installation *Union* employs the traditional craft of wedge-tenon joints to bear the traces of time, embodying the ancient philosophy of the unity of heaven and humanity and harmony with the laws of nature. The three works resonate with one another, collectively establishing a subtle narrative of time and space.
Many modern classics are created using the square as their basic form, responding to the essence of design. (Unittest is an experimental project launched by LIMN LAB in 2022. Using a 50×50×50 basic form, it explores how different design concepts and material techniques manifest within this fundamental shape. It serves as both a tribute to classic art and design and an exploration of traditional materials and craftsmanship.)
Donald Judd wrote in *Concrete Objects*: An object is an independent and complete objective existence; space is no longer merely a container but a creative medium on par with the object itself. Object and space mutually shape one another, jointly constituting a landscape. The ORIGIN sofa achieves a balance between form and proportions and the seating experience through modern minimalist expression. The pine Unittest chair is placed within a space enclosed by white walls, thereby echoing Judd’s philosophical concept of the interdependence of object, space, and landscape.
Five wooden modular chairs, each crafted using a different technique, are stacked vertically on top of one another. Their soaring form disrupts the rhythm of the flat, open space, causing viewers to instinctively look up as they enter the space. This shift in perspective—from looking up to looking down—naturally establishes a visual connection between the viewer and the artwork, further bridging the gap between the space and the viewer, and allowing those within it to tangibly perceive the relationship between the objects and their surroundings.
LIMN LAB has long been dedicated to developing and refining its own design research system. Drawing on the studio’s extensive collection of books, the team has revisited modernist art—exploring the pioneering work of artists such as Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, and Carl Andre—to examine the relationship between concepts and physical objects; On the other hand, architectural pioneers such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn, and Siza created entirely new structures through order, proportion, and spatial architecture, charting a course for modern daily life. By looking back at the past through these collections, we gain insight into the complete line of thought behind each classic work.
LIMN LAB
The same products, when arranged in different combinations, can create distinct atmospheric experiences. By removing distractions from the space and minimizing the form of objects, people themselves become the focal point of the space. With freely arranged scenes and objects placed naturally in accordance with the space’s dimensions, people can find peace of mind and truly experience a sense of comfort.
This white modular chair, placed within the space, pays homage to Sol LeWitt and Rietveld. As a pioneer of conceptual art, LeWitt proposed that the essence of art lies in the artist’s conceptual ideas and creative principles. The chair’s geometric framework transforms artistic concepts—which were once confined to exhibition halls—into everyday objects that people can touch, sit on, and use, allowing them to experience the tangible manifestation of artistic concepts firsthand.
The space features a desk, chair, and glass coffee table designed by master architect Álvaro Siza. Positioned to capture the natural light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and with careful attention to the texture, materials, and proportions, the design infuses the quiet, poetic essence unique to architectural design into the everyday scenes of working at a desk, all within the interplay of light and shadow.
In the living room, we designed a different overall layout. The gray Origin sofas are arranged symmetrically; the full-bodied drape of the linen fabric softens the lines of the furniture, and the symmetrical arrangement balances the spatial layout.
The Origin square side tables, featuring exquisite lacquered finishes, are joined together to form a seamless, continuous tabletop. Paired with An Qixian’s ceramic-based lacquerware, they complement one another and enhance the space’s artistic quality. The wood paneling exudes a calm and warm ambiance, blending with the diverse materials of the furniture designed by Xiza and the PK lounge chairs to create a relaxed and comfortable everyday atmosphere within the minimalist architectural space.
