Ome Dezin, a U.S.-based design studio, draws inspiration from Los Angeles’ diverse architectural heritage and ways of living, seeking a balance between history and contemporary life. In its transformation of The Colony residence, the studio does not attempt to replicate the architectural character of a particular era, but instead focuses on a distinctly Californian way of living—open, relaxed, and closely connected to nature. By respecting the original architectural language and spatial qualities, the design reinterprets the residence for contemporary life, preserving not only its architectural form but also the character of life embedded within it, allowing the spirit of the past to remain relevant today.

Through a restrained and nuanced approach, Ome Dezin seeks to create a home that retains a sense of history while embodying a natural, liberated, and enduring contemporary character.

YINJISPACE: Rather than restoring the house to its original 1960s condition, the project reinterprets its mid-century identity for contemporary living. In your view, how do you balance preserving the architectural spirit of a house with responding to the needs of today's lifestyle?
Ome Dezin：对我们而言，修复首先是理解一座住宅原本的建筑意图、历史，以及它与环境之间的关系，而不是覆盖已经存在的东西。The Colony 本身拥有非常鲜明的中世纪建筑语言。我们尽可能保留并强化这些特质，只在真正需要的地方介入，通过材料、色彩与新的空间元素回应当代生活。我们希望住宅能够保有自己的历史，同时又自然地属于今天。
Ome Dezin: For us, restoration begins with understanding a home’s original architectural intent, its history, and its relationship to its surroundings, rather than overwriting what already exists. The Colony already had a strong mid-century identity. We sought to preserve and strengthen those qualities, intervening only where necessary through material, color, and new spatial elements. The aim was for the house to retain its history while feeling entirely natural to contemporary life.

Ome Dezin: Flow is always an important consideration in our approach to a home. Rather than treating rooms in isolation, we look at how spaces relate to one another and how people move and pause within them.The Colony already offered a strong architectural framework. The new spiral staircase opened up the entrance and strengthened the connection between the two levels. From the reading area and primary suite to the balcony and garden, the spaces unfold gradually, creating a natural rhythm between openness and intimacy.

Set on an 8,802 sq ft lot, this 4 bed/3.5 bathroom property has been carefully reimagined by interior design studio Ome Dezin, preserving its architectural integrity while introducing a refined contemporary sensibility. A newly crafted oversized pivot door opens to a striking double-height foyer, where gallery-like proportions and a sawtooth ceiling allow natural light to pour in, immediately setting the tone.

The main living spaces are defined by clarity and openness: a generous living room with a mid-century fireplace connects seamlessly to a dining area and a large open custom kitchen, centered around an expansive marble island. Materials are deliberate and tactile, with a focus on quality, proportion, and calm continuity throughout.

This thoughtfully designed space features a detailed layout, complete with an open shower that transitions through double glass doors to the outdoors. Dual built-out closets add to the convenience.

The luxurious open shower, flanked by marble finishes, creates a serene retreat.

A dedicated laundry room is conveniently located on this level. A full-length balcony extends from the suite, overlooking the garden, pool, and surrounding greenery, with distant mountain views completing the composition.

Outdoors, the grounds are arranged across two levels. The first features a fully replastered pool, lounge area, in-ground spa, and outdoor dining space, where the home’s architectural lines can be appreciated in full.

A second, more secluded tier offers a shaded terrace, a Zen garden, and a sauna—creating a series of intimate environments within the landscape. Additional features include a large double garage with built-in storage, controlled access from both sides of the property, and a consistent emphasis on privacy, light, and spatial harmony throughout.
